The members of the CIS committee of the Duma were expressing their hope that the Council would support the idea of independence of the breakaway regions. According to them, the decision is closely related with the forthcoming NATO summit and possible start of the NATO/MAP in Georgia.
The State Council of Russia started discussion of the issue on recognition of independence of the de facto republics – Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Prednestrovie started on March 13th. During the recent hearing the Russian MPs had offered the de facto authorities "deferred status" of the breakaway regions.
