At this time condition of Alkhas Kvarantia (1 year 7 months-old) from Abkhazia, Georgia is stable and there is a possibility for a full recovery. Though, by initial assessment of physicians it was practically impossible to save patient's life.

As a result of an accident (the toddler was scalded with boiling water) Alkhas Kvarantia received burns of the second and third degree of 55 percent of the body surface. Doctors of the burn centre have been fighting for his life for more than two weeks. On May 10th under the guidance of surgeon Guga Kashibadze the boy underwent surgery to transplant 12 percent of the skin - on his legs and left arm. The operation lasted more than an hour and a half.

Alkhaz Kvarantia was taken to Tbilisi by his mother Khibla Tsvizhba and his relatives on April 21st. They managed to come to Gali from Sukhumi on their own, and crossed the line of the Russian occupation to get to Zugdidi in an ambulance through the assistance of the Red Cross.

Even before the yesterday's surgery the child was baptized in Tbilisi and was given ecclesiastical name of Irakli. All medical expenses of Alkhas Kvarantia are financed by the Government of Georgia.
