Georgian Police Use Batons To Disperse Opposition Protesters Print E-mail
June 15, 2009

TBILISI, Georgia (AFP)--Georgian police wielding batons violently dispersed several dozen opposition protesters outside a police detention center in the capital Tbilisi, an AFP photographer said.

The protesters were confronted by dozens of police when they gathered in the afternoon outside the center, where clashes between police and the opposition had broken out last month.

Police descended on the protesters and began hitting them with batons, the photographer said. Several appeared to have been injured.

Georgia's opposition has been holding daily protests since April 9 to demand President Mikhail Saakashvili's resignation.
