GEORGIA: SHEVARDNADZE SEEKS PAYBACK AGAINST SAAKASHVILI Print E-mail
March 09, 2009

As Georgia’s political opposition tries to pressure President Mikheil Saakashvili to resign, former President Eduard Shevardnadze has thrown his support behind a major opposition rally planned for April 9.

Appearing on the March 8 TV talk show Politikuri Kvira (Political Week), Shevardnadze called for the 13 opposition parties that intend to take part in the protest to maintain a united front against the Georgian leader. "If this [rally] lasts for 10 days, then nothing is going to come of it," Shevardnadze said. He chastised the opposition for failing to make proper use of the crowds that gathered in downtown Tbilisi downtown in November 2008 for anti-Saakashvili protests following Georgia’s unsuccessful war with Russia earlier that year.

Though never a one for taking part in political rallies, the 81-year-old former Soviet foreign minister speaks from experience. Shevardnadze was ousted from power following November 2003 demonstrations against falsified election results organized in part by Saakashvili’s own National Movement Party.

A Quotation

"The belief that security can be obtained by throwing a small state to the wolves is a fatal delusion."
Winston Churchill, The Gathering Storm

"This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense! Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy!"
Winston Churchill, October 29, 1941
